Further afield
South Luangwa National Park – “one of the finest wildlife areas in all of Africa” (Lonely Planet). It is another 130km from Chipata to get to Mfuwe in South Luangwa and this is dirt road so can take anything from 3 hours to most of the day, depending on the season. Getting there by public transport is possible but can be tricky. You can sometimes rent a vehicle from the hospital to drive yourselves there.
At Mfuwe there are several good places to stay, all of which offer game drives (wildlife viewing) and (during the dry season) safari walks. The most frequently visited are Flatdogs and Wildlife Camp.
Malawi – the Malawian border is only 30km beyond Chipata, with frequent mini-buses passing to and fro. Lake Malawi is 1-2 days away using public transport from Katete, but once there you will find sandy beaches, and clear salt-free waters (Schistosomiasis is is a risk - but you can get Praziquantel from SFH, or get tested back home) and a good range of accommodation.
